Medicine / Health, Disease | NIF: A third dose is not enough to control the spread of Omigron

In Denmark, 10 percent of people infected with Omigran are vaccinated with the three-dose vaccine. Vaccines alone are not enough to control the spread of infection, says Bukholm in the FHI.

– No wonder. We know that these vaccines are not 100 percent safe, and even a booster dose can lead to infection in a person, says Geir Bukholm, director of infection control for the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) NRK.

Statistics on Sunday show that 2,471 people in Denmark are affected by the Omigron variant. About 10 percent of them are infected even after taking three vaccines. In Norway, the FHI says that so far no one has been vaccinated against three doses of micronutrients.

– The most important effect we can expect from a booster dose is to be able to effectively protect people from serious illnesses, says Bukolm.

The measures introduced are constantly evaluated for adequacy.

– We do not expect a third dose to be sufficient to control the spread of infection, he says.

Assistant Director of Health Espen Nakstad agrees that the number of registered Omigran infections in Denmark is doubling every third day.

– It goes very fast. Looking at the number of combinations in Denmark, we are concerned that this could go too fast. Then we have to go inside and evaluate the activities in Norway, he says, whether they are effective enough against Omigron.

Among other things, it is important to find out where the infection is spreading, and Knoxstad believes the measures are adequately targeted.
