Musk says Tesla is working on making Steam games in cars
The entire Steam library will be available in Tesla cars, if Tesla boss Elon Musk gets what he wants. He announced this on Twitter on Tuesday.
“We are working on the general topic of getting Steam games to work on Tesla for specific titles. The former is clearly where we have to be in the long run,” Musk replied in a thread that was originally about Cyberpunk 2077 and where Musk was asked if Cyberpunk was coming to Cybertruck.
Today, Tesla’s infotainment system includes a small selection of games, with a selection ranging from simple old Atari games to some newer releases like Stardew Valley, Cuphead, and Fallout Shelter. You can play it directly on the screen with the controls or by using the car steering wheel for some racing games.
At the recent launch event for the Plaid Edition of the Model S, Tesla revealed a playable version of Cyberpunk 2077, as well as promotional images of the vehicle clearly showing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on the indoor screen.
However, none have appeared yet, and they are also versions adapted specifically for the Tesla system rather than the general compatibility, Musk says.
More advanced games will likely require a Tesla with a relatively new history. With the Model S Plaid, Tesla also launched the so-called MCU3 chip, which is an upgrade to the in-car processor and also has a much more powerful graphics chip than before.
Location Video Cards I previously reviewed the specifications of the AMD RDNA2 chip found in the MCU3, based on a leaked diagram from Tesla. Here they came to the conclusion that its performance is about 10 teraflops, which is approximately equal to the latest generation of consoles such as Sony Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X.
However, the system is “only” with 8GB of graphics memory and has a memory bandwidth on par with the Xbox Series S, but performance should in theory still be good enough to run plenty of newer games at fairly decent quality settings.
The Model 3 and Model Y also gradually received the MCU3 chip. The factory was launched in Shanghai first, and around the new year, it was also reported that American factories began producing cars with AMD chips on board.
Tesla also has a tradition of offering the ability to upgrade the onboard MCU, so you get better performance and access to the latest features.
The Model S Plaid also has an all-new infotainment screen. Tesla has moved away from the portrait orientation of its previous cars and instead has switched the screen to landscape. The screen has dimensions of 17 inches and a resolution of 2200 x 1300 pixels, which is more than the resolution of Full HD. It also has a small screen for rear seat passengers.
