A fire at a hospital in the south of the country has killed at least 41 people. Ammar Bashar, a spokeswoman for the Southern The Car Provincial Health Commission, confirmed the figures. Eyewitnesses talk about 48 deaths!

The hospital is located in Nasiriyah, in the province of The Car, 370 kilometers south of the capital Baghdad. According to Bashar, there were 63 Govt patients in the hospital’s isolation ward.

When black smoke rose on the building, dozens of people ran to help people in the hospital. The bodies of the victims were recovered after the fire was extinguished. The search for more victims continues.

Witnesses told a German newspaper that the fire was caused by an exploding oxygen cylinder, but initially there was no official confirmation. The cabinet said Prime Minister Mustafa al-Qasimi held an emergency meeting with several ministers and security officials to inquire into the cause of the fire.

Civil Defense teams from surrounding provinces were called in to assist in the city of Nasiriyah and were able to extinguish the fire, Civil Defense Chief Qadim Bohan said in a statement.

People died from severe burns. It is said that 16 patients may have been saved from the burning ward.

In April alone, a corona clinic in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, was destroyed, killing 82 people and wounding 110 others. The then health minister, Hassan al-Tamimi, resigned in response to the fire, which was said to have been caused by improper storage of oxygen bottles.
