The State Department confirmed to NRK the arrest of a Norwegian man in his fifties in Paraguay.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is aware that a Norwegian citizen has been arrested in Paraguay and is providing consular assistance to the person concerned. Due to legal confidentiality, we cannot comment on further individual details in our follow-up to the case, Tuva Director of Communications Raanes Bogsnes wrote in an email to NRK.

The case was covered by local media, which published pictures of what was supposed to be the arrest. Pictures of what appears to be the man’s Norwegian passport have also been published.

He claims to have attacked the officer

According to local media, he was arrested on Sunday, when he was behaving suspiciously. It was the security guard who called the police, who was attacked when the police went to meet the man, according to a local TV station.

Police said the Norwegian also attacked a police officer with a chain. The officer was sent to the hospital.

– We controlled the person. We found five containers of gasoline and toilet paper, Police Commissioner Edgar Vega tells the TV channel.

They have sent the contents of the containers for further investigation.

The Norwegian has not commented or answered as to why these things are with him, the TV channel reported. Paraguayan media said the police suspected him of making a Molotov cocktail.

Police say he entered the country on March 25 this year, and has a residence permit until September 25.

Paraguay is located roughly in the center of Latin America, bordering Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil.
