According to the operations center in the Møre og Romsdal police district, the search was launched after a person was reported missing.
Police, Red Cross and rescue dogs were involved in the search.
Also, the rescue boat Idar Ulstein is searching the sea around Timnoia. A helicopter is also in the area, says our correspondent who was at the scene.
At 21.15 the police posted a message on Twitter about the ongoing operation. A woman in her forties seems to be wanted there.
According to the Red Cross Guard, auxiliary forces participated from Volda, Ørsta, Vanylven, Spjelkavik, Sørøyane, Brattvåg, Vatne/Tenfjord and Ålesund.
