The filmmakers of The Beach from 2000 received massive criticism after filming. They allegedly planted dozens of coconut trees to give Maya Bay a more “tropical feel” and were accused of tearing up vegetation.

American production studio 20th Century Fox insisted they leave the beach just as they found it.

Plus, they must have removed tons of trash.

Now, more than two decades later, the authorities are taking action.

It’s been 22 years since the Hollywood movie The Beach was filmed in Maya Bay, Thailand.

Now the kingdom’s Supreme Court has ordered officials to continue work on the site’s environmental rehabilitation, reports Watchman.

The ruling on Maya Bay on the island of Ko Phi Phi Leh comes decades after local authorities sued over environmental damages.

Local authorities have filed a civil case against Thai authorities, 20th Century Fox and a Thai film coordinator.

At the end of 1999, local authorities applied for 100 million baht in compensation for environmental damage. That’s roughly 45 million NOK today.

On Tuesday, the Bangkok High Court upheld an earlier ruling by a civil court that the Royal Forest Department was responsible for the rehabilitation of Maya Bay.

In a final ruling, the Supreme Court ordered a commission to prepare a plan to rehabilitate the beach within 30 days.

Victim of mass tourism

The Hollywood movie put Maya Bay on the map and fell victim to mass tourism.

It was shut down in October 2018 to allow the site to recover after being hit by 6,000 daily visitors.

The entire Phi Phi archipelago became the focus of the global pandemic and the number of visitors fell to almost zero when Thailand introduced strict travel rules.

Maya Bay reopened to tourists in early 2022, but visitor numbers are limited to try to stem the environmental damage.
