MANCHESTER (Dagbladet): “I wish he was English,” says Henry Winter, The Times’ football commentator, to Dagbladet.

The subject is Erling Braut Haaland. The Norwegian giant has 19 goals for Manchester City.

The whole nation would forget politics and everything else if Haaland were English, says Winter.

It would have appeared on the front, middle, and back pages. It’s good for him and Manchester City that he’s not English. Football fans, like me, will be berserk.

Winter continues:

– We will have a captain for the national team. There will be requests for a statue outside Wembley. You will get information that football is back home. The whole nation will go berserk.

The dedicated commentator speaks with commitment – a twinkle in his eye – as we sit at the Emirates Stadium in London.

– He was going to be on the front pages the whole time. Now he can live his life. It is interesting as a phenomenon in football. If he was English, gossip magazines would be around him all the time.

But:

– If he wants English citizenship, we can of course talk together, says Winter and chuckles.

Today is a new battle. Manchester City – Southampton at the Etihad Stadium at 4 pm. In Manchester, there is one question that applies beforehand: what can the Norwegian do this time?

Alan Shearer and Andy Cole set the record for scoring 34 goals in a single season in the Premier League. Haaland has 14 goals already. Teammate Manuel Akanji told The Sun that he believes the striker can finish with 50 goals.

– If he remains without injuries, there is nothing to stop him. Swiss says.

– I have nothing to know about scoring goals, says manager Pep Guardiola, who believes Haaland’s instincts are innate.

My only concern is how long he will play here. It’s just a joy to watch, says Winter, the football commentator.

Spanish newspapers wrote that Haaland has a clause in his contract that states that he can go to Real Madrid in 2024. Guardiola refused this at a press conference on Wednesday.

winter says:

– Why would he go to Real Madrid? Spanish football has its challenges. Well, it’s Real Madrid. But he just arrived at Manchester City.

He indicates:

– It’s like getting out of church after you marry a beautiful woman. Then she looks for another woman in the parking lot. This does not happen here. Haaland is dedicated to what he does. The way he and his father organized his career is very clever.

But Southampton is first in the other half of the field.
