Corona Virus, ESPN Nakstad | Naxtad: an infection that has waited a lot of contact between people

Espen Nakstad, assistant director of health, says the jump in infection in the past 24 hours is not surprising. It is still not known how severe the consequences are.

Nearly 750 new cases of corona were recorded in the past 24 hours – the highest number since early April.

In the past seven days, an average of 537 corona infections were recorded daily. The corresponding average seven days ago was 465, so the trend is on the rise.

– Had those numbers come in half a year ago, they would have scared us of the water, Nakstad tells NTB

He says the numbers are as expected because people have more contact with each other than they did earlier this summer. But now the situation is not that serious because many have been vaccinated.

So far, just over 3.7 million Norwegians have received the first dose of coronary artery vaccine, while 2.2 million have received the second dose. (© NTB)

Worry about the elderly

With each passing week, the consequences become less severe. However, it is important to be vigilant to prevent infection.

– It is difficult to determine the number of admissions in the coming weeks, and it is asked which age groups are most affected. We are very concerned about the unvaccinated in the older age groups, he says.

Thirty-two coronavirus patients were hospitalized on Tuesday, three more than the day before.

Vaccine rate record

He says there are several reasons why some older adults have not yet been vaccinated, despite being offered them. Some may be on vacation when they get an appointment, while others are traveling abroad.

Some may be unsure, but end up wanting a vaccine anyway, says Nakstad.

He confirms that we still lack the immunity of the population.

The vaccination rate is higher than ever. The FHI vaccine calendar indicates that we have reached the goal of vaccinating all adults in Norway by mid-September.

On Friday, it was announced that Norway will receive an additional 1 million doses of the Moderna vaccine from Poland, so vaccination could accelerate even further.

Multiple outbreaks are likely

The few weeks left before we reach the end of vaccination will be crucial to whether or not we catch a fourth wave of infection. People have much more contact than before, and the highly contagious delta variant cannot be prayed twice.

– It is likely that there will be more outbreaks that can require municipalities to deal with them, but at the same time the frequency of vaccination will help us a lot. Nakstad – who again warns against close contact – says:

Remember to keep your distance from public places, stay home if you are not well and test yourself for symptoms.
