Cristiano Ronaldo was eliminated from the World Cup round of 16 against Portugal. Goncalo Ramos came through, who took care of the chance with both hands.
The 21-year-old, Portugal’s top scorer with nine goals in 11 appearances for Benfica this season, went through half-and-a-half to score a hat-trick in Portugal’s 6-1 win over Switzerland.
– It was an ordinary evening at work for him. He’s a striker, so he has to score, smiles Portugal’s Bruno Fernandes for TV 2, before continuing:
– I’m kidding. He’s very young, and this was his first match from the start in WC. He delivered three goals, one assist and a great work effort. It’s great. Everyone is happy for him. He deserved it because he worked so hard to get his chances. He was important before this game, and he will be important in the games to come. The whole team matters.
This was the first hat-trick of the FIFA World Cup this year.
Ronaldo’s photos are shocking
Portugal has a new champion. What a way to present yourself on the bigger stage, says the sullen TV 2 commentator Oyvind.
First, Goncalo Ramos made it 1-0 from the nearest cross, before veteran Pepe slotted home a corner kick. Early in the second half, Ramos scored it 3-0 on the near goal. A few minutes later, Rafael Guerrero made it 4-0 to a good, sparkling Portuguese team.
Who needs Cristiano Ronaldo? The Falcon shouted after 4-0.
The spectators shouted at Ronaldo
Manuel Akanji cut the score to 1-4 after a corner kick, but Goncalo Ramos did not finish scoring. Midway through the second half, he came into his own with Switzerland goalkeeper Jan Sommer and shot 5-1 for Portugal.
In the 73rd minute, Ramos came off for his fourth cap and was replaced by Cristiano Ronaldo, who was greeted with wild cheers. Ten minutes later, he put the ball into the goal, but the non-club star waved offside right.
In extra time, Rafael Leao made it 6-1 with a great goal.
– Portugal sends an appropriate signal to the other quarter-finalists. Al-Saker said it is a team to be reckoned with for the rest of the tournament.
In the quarterfinals, Morocco will be waiting for Portugal.
