Tesla Tesla all competitors in the run-up to Christmas

Tesla is about to deliver a 2022 sales year that really smells like combustion. The Model Y has been a big seller throughout the year and takes most of the credit for the fact that Tesla is now the best-selling brand in Norway, by a good margin.

Earlier this fall, it looked like Volkswagen could give them a fight for first place, but that’s no longer very realistic.

Daily updated registration numbers from the Road Traffic Information Board (OFV) show that Tesla has launched a crackdown. So far in December, they have registered 3,254 cars. This is much more than Volkswagen, which so far had 1,882 cars for the month.

Best Seller: The Tesla Model Y has become by far Norway’s new people’s car. Here, Tesla hit the spot.

Avoid long queues

So far this year, there have been 19,152 new Tesla cars on Norwegian roads. The corresponding number from VW is 17921.

However, it is difficult to know whether this reflects sales. It is known that Volkswagen has a large backlog of electric vehicles, i.e. cars that have been ordered but not yet delivered.

Tesla, for its part, has received a large number of cars for the country and thus has been able to avoid long queues.

Long delivery time: VW struggled with delivery times on both the ID.4 and ID.5. Thus, it is also not easy to know what the registration numbers would have looked like if the importer had brought more cars into the country. Photo: NTB

A race against time

While it was Volkswagen and Toyota that for a long time competed for first place in Norway, the latter has been aggressively overtaken this year. Toyota has delivered 12,441 vehicles as of December 19. Then it is followed by BMW (11,685 cars) and Volvo with 9,877 cars.

BMW and Volvo have also delivered more cars in December so far than Toyota has. But whether it was enough for someone to finish third in the race is hard to say.

The number of cars delivered was a record high in November, and the pace continues in December. Towards the end of the year, a large number of cars arrived, especially in the port of Drammen, which is the largest reception point for new cars to Norway. Here, it has become a race against time for many importers and retailers.

Bad with the Christmas holidays

So many also have to use the Christmas space to get cars out, and the Christmas holidays can be bad for many in the industry. This is where it comes in that there will be a weight tax on all cars and a value added tax on electric cars over NOK 500,000, from the new year.

This could save several tens of thousands of car registrations in 2022, rather than waiting until after the new year. Naturally, many people want to take advantage of it.

This is disappearing – and must be sold before the New Year
