Musk assumed leadership of Twitter in late October, after buying the company for $44 billion. Until then, he said the lead role would be temporary.
The decision to step down as social media CEO comes as a result of a poll he created himself two days ago, in which he asked users if he should quit. 17.5 million voted, and 57.5 percent of them called for Musk to step down. He had said beforehand that he would join after the result.
Not just joy
It’s swirled around both Twitter and Musk — the world’s richest man, who also heads electric car maker Tesla and spaceflight company SpaceX — since he bought social media.
A number of employees have been laid off. Musk himself has partly managed the business in detail, and several journalists have recently been denied entry. According to Musk, this was temporary and because they broke the rules about sharing information about the whereabouts of others.
Accordingly, he was accused of threatening freedom of expression, while he himself claims to be a champion of this freedom.
Many threatened to leave Twitter after Musk took over, and many took the threats seriously. In addition to bans that many considered arbitrary, sudden changes in terms and rules — as well as sudden reversals of some changes — outweighed the platform’s predictability.
