North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said that his country should be ready to launch nuclear attacks at any time to prevent war. According to the Korean Central News Agency, he accuses the United States and South Korea of expanding joint military exercises that include US nuclear assets.
Exercise Freedom Shield 23 began on Monday, March 13, and will end on March 24. It is the largest joint exercise between the United States and South Korea since 2017.

Monday’s KCNA message said Kim conducted two days of military exercises “simulating a nuclear counterattack,” including the firing of a ballistic missile equipped with a fake nuclear warhead.
On Sunday, messages came through the South Korean General Staff and the Japanese Coast Guard that North Korea had conducted a test-fire of a short-range ballistic missile that fell into the sea between North Korea and Japan.
The KCNA statement on Monday said Kim expressed satisfaction after the weekend tests were conducted to “familiarize relevant units with procedures and operations for carrying out tactical nuclear attack missions.”
These exercises are the fourth in a row from North Korea in a week.

North Korea has conducted a number of missile tests in recent months.
The number of missile tests rose after the United States and South Korea resumed comprehensive joint military exercises last year. The training activity is primarily intended as a deterrent to North Korea.
North Korea protested vehemently and stated that its missile tests are a response to military threats from the United States.
North Korea believes that the military exercises conducted by the United States and South Korea are rehearsals for the invasion of North Korea. Pyongyang has repeatedly warned that it is ready to respond with “crushing” measures.
Nuclear fear
Western politicians, experts and analysts have been fearing for months that North Korea will conduct its first nuclear weapons test in several years and what could be the seventh nuclear weapons test in the country’s history.
It has not happened yet, but many of the country’s missile tests until 2022 have been discussed in the United Nations Security Council. However, the Security Council was paralyzed because Western countries were unable to agree with Russia and China on responses against North Korea.
Numerous missile tests in recent months have drawn sharp criticism from Western countries. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also criticized the tests without helping. His spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said on February 18 that North Korea should “immediately refrain from further provocative actions” that violate UN Security Council resolutions.
