Wireless Portable Charger in Car – Is this the most useless function of all?

Wireless Portable Charger in Car – Is this the most useless function of all?

(Elbil24): We live in 2023 and we are used to the fact that much of what was once wired has long been wireless. Phones, remote controls, game controllers, keyboards, and mice are devices we take for granted and work at least without — as they do with wires.

In the long run, it may happen that the electric vehicle charging cable will become a thing of the past, and then we are really talking about a technical progress that simplifies life.

A Norwegian company revolutionizing electric vehicle charging

Wireless charging for mobile phones is a step forward in many ways. The principle of induction is similar to the variants of wireless electric vehicle charging that are currently being tested in various places around the world.

At the same time, there are a few jobs that create more frustration.

Then I’m not talking about wireless charging for an electric car, but about wireless charging for your mobile phone – in the car.

If you’ve purchased a new electric car in the past two years, there’s a good chance (or should we say risk) that your car also has a wireless charging pad somewhere on the center console. On some models, they are fancy extras that you can configure when ordering the car.

my advice? Instead, spend the money on other jobs that you enjoy more.

I can start with the basic problem. Of all the cars I’ve tested in the past three years, almost none had a working wireless portable charger before I pulled the cellphone out of its case. Good to keep in mind if, like me, you want to protect an investment of over NOK 10,000 with a lid.

The next problem is that many of the in-car wireless chargers I’ve tested are simply unreliable. For example, in many cases, a simple change of location can suffice before shipping is interrupted. It’s never certain you’ll get it, and as a result the battery indicator glows with a thin red line even when you’ve reached your destination.

The third problem is well illustrated with a real-world example. Earlier this week, I took a test drive of a bunch of popular electric cars. When I put my iPhone 13 Pro Max on the wireless charging pad, it was at 15 percent capacity. After two hours of driving, the capacity had increased to 21 percent. Six percentage points increase, that is – in one hundred and twenty minutes!

Then you would certainly have used Apple CarPlay during the trip, but with a cable, it is very likely that the mobile phone will be fully charged – or at least close to it – at the same time.

Not only that: the mobile phone was glowing at this point, and the following warning appeared on the screen:

Is this the most useless feature ever?

It becomes ridiculous when two USB ports are placed four centimeters from the charging socket of a mobile phone. A small stub of wire would have done the job much better.

The example is far from unique; It’s more the rule than the exception — at least when it comes to the iPhone. At the same time, I’m using a wireless charger on my bedside table, and everything works better there.

In other words, there must be hope in the car (or should we say without a rope) in the car.

SMART AND SHORT: There are those short charging cables, perfect for car use if you hate cable noodles. You know what's the best thing about it? It's so short that it keeps you from being tempted to pick up your phone while you're driving. Photo: Bjorn Eric Lutas

Until now, I always have the charging cable in the cabin in the center console, knowing that if I need to charge my mobile phone on the way, it guarantees fast charging – every time – and without having to remove all obstacles between the charger and the mobile.

You should do that too

It solves the problem at a cost of 0 kr and 0 kr.
