Artificial Intelligence, Robotics | OECD: One in four could lose their jobs as a result of AI

Industrialized countries are facing an AI revolution, and nearly one in four workers risks losing their jobs as a result of the use of AI, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Jobs will disappear, new jobs will be created and the labor market will see major changes ahead, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) notes in a new report.

The development of artificial intelligence, with tools that can write articles, produce images and pass medical exams, has led to fears that entire sectors of working life may become redundant in the coming years.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development estimates that 27 percent of the workforce in its 38 member states is at greater risk of becoming redundant as a result of the introduction of artificial intelligence.

Although the use of AI remains relatively low, the report states that rapid development, falling costs, and increased availability of workers with AI skills indicate that OECD economies may be facing an AI revolution.

big danger

– Although there are many potential benefits from the use of artificial intelligence, there are also significant risks that must be evaluated immediately, it is still ongoing.

The OECD believes it is very important to collect data on the consequences of the introduction of AI, including the extent to which it will make workers redundant, create new jobs or require new skills from workers.

The use of artificial intelligence is still in the experimental stage and is taking place primarily in large companies that have so far only laid off employees to a small extent, notes Stefano Scarpetta, who heads the Employment and Social Issues Department at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

– But it is also clear that the possibility of it being used as a replacement is great, which increases the fear of lower wages and job losses, he believes.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development believes that AI can also contribute to employee security by reducing the need to perform “tedious or dangerous tasks”, which would entail higher wages for workers with the necessary technological competence.

ethical challenges

The use of AI can also lead to a higher pace and more pressure on employees, as well as lower wages when there are fewer tasks to manually solve, it was reported.

The use of AI also entails serious ethical challenges related to data protection, privacy, transparency, discrimination, automated decision-making processes, and accountability, says Scarpetta.

– Action must be taken immediately to ensure that AI is used in a responsible and confidence-inspiring way in working life, he says.
