At the end of last July, Spanish media revealed that Isinbajieva had moved to Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. Before that time she had been out of sight for approximately two years and her whereabouts were unknown.

Isinbaeva herself denied that her move to Spain was an escape from Russia, and said that she was a “global citizen.”
