Statcraft is moving to the cloud

Statcraft is moving to the cloud

IT consultants Sopra Steria are now assisting the energy company with the project, which according to Microsoft is among the largest migrations carried out in Norway in recent years.

It’s all the data centers and more than 1,000 servers in Norway and South America, which are now being moved to the cloud and migrated to the Microsoft Azure platform.

Good profitability

Vincent Christiansen, head of cloud infrastructure at Statkraft, expects immediate benefits from the project. He points out that the world needs clean energy, and with strong global growth ambitions in the coming years, it makes more sense to be in the cloud than on the ground.

The basis of the project is positive and indicates that the investment will cover its costs within a few years. We will become a more efficient, data-driven organization, and we will have access to new technology that will help us increase the pace of innovation. In addition, we will benefit from the fact that platforms are standardized and that solutions can easily scale up and down as needed, says Statkraft’s Christiansen.

As a strategic partner, Sopra Steria looks forward to being part of Statkraft’s digitalization journey, the company wrote, in a message about moving to the cloud.

Transfer important data

According to Tor Inge Åsen, Industry Leader for Energy and Utilities at Microsoft, this is one of the largest migration projects in the Norwegian context.

Statkraft has strong growth ambitions, and needs to facilitate this growth. By migrating their infrastructure to the cloud, Statkraft gains extensive benefits and flexibility. Since energy production is critical to society and therefore highly regulated, this will be a complex and pioneering project, Microsoft’s Åsen says in the press release.
