The match was stopped after the accident, and Hakala was taken to hospital. She later underwent surgery there.
It is difficult to understand what happened, that the collision with the pole was very serious, and that the consequences became very great. Not only do I have to quit hockey, but I may have to be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life, Hakala wrote in an Instagram post.
She says she is paralyzed from the chest down, and that the functions of her arms and hands are limited.
– This is the reality that I must try to live with. I realize that I am now facing a long and difficult battle with my body, the hardest battle of my life, continues the Finnish HV71 captain.
Hakala has played for Sweden since 2016. With Finland she won two bronze medals at the Olympics as well as three medals at the World Championships. Now the career is suddenly over.
– It is clear that the situation is bad, but I am not afraid to leave it. “I don’t know what to do next, but I know it will be quite difficult,” she writes.
