Using artificial intelligence-powered robots, the companies “stole” The New York Times’ massive investment in journalism by using it to build replacement products without permission or payment, the newspaper’s lawsuit says, according to Agence France-Presse.
The New York Times, one of the world's most respected media organizations, is demanding compensation, as well as a court order that the companies stop using the newspaper's content and delete the data obtained.
Although no amount was specified in the lawsuit, The New York Times claims that OpenAI and Microsoft's “violation” could cost the two companies “billions of dollars.”
With the lawsuit, The New York Times is choosing a different approach than media houses such as the German Axel Springer or the American Associated Press, both of which have concluded agreements with OpenAI.
OpenAI and Microsoft have not yet wanted to comment on the lawsuit against AFP.
