Southern Norway also has a high chance of seeing the Northern Lights this evening.
It informs Meteorological Institute at X.
The best conditions for viewing the Northern Lights are when the sky is dark and clear without clouds. Even with lots of clouds, there may still be holes in the cloud cover where the Northern Lights can be seen:
– Clouds will be low in eastern Norway at midnight, maybe it will crack enough to see the northern lights?, they write on Friday afternoon.
The KP index indicates the likelihood of seeing the Northern Lights. P-index 0 means low activity, KP-index 9 means high activity. So the higher the number, the more likely you are to see the Northern Lights.
Notes: Remember that light pollution affects conditions. That's why it's a good idea to get out of areas where as few street lights and other light sources can disturb you as possible.
Find a dark place
VG has previously spoken to Pål Brekke, material manager at the Norwegian Space Center, about tips and advice:
- First and foremost, you need to be alert – because the light is usually strongest between 10pm and 2am.
- If the northern lights strike and you arrive in southern Norway, it is very important to go somewhere dark. City lights and street lights can cause damage.
- Bracke recommends plains, fields, or forests for the optimal northern lights experience. And there can be good options by the sea or by the beach, he adds.
- – So it is important to dress well and be patient.
For the particularly curious, the expert advises that there are apps and sites that can send you push notifications when activity in the sky increases.
