– We are sniffing for a record

Most people have probably invented both sunglasses and sunbeds. May was unusually warm.

This year May 17 was the hottest day in many parts of Norway. Now meteorologist Siri Viberg believes we're sniffing another record:

– We've already had ten days of high summer in May, with temperatures of 25 degrees or more. May 2018 had 15 hot summer days on record, so we're sniffing that heat record, he says.

Meteorologist on duty

The storm's meteorologist, Rohr Inge Hansen, believes the record could fall.

– We still have warm air above us and it will be in southern Norway, so breaking that record is really possible, says Hansen.

It's dry – and there's a risk of forest fires: there's currently an orange warning in western Norway and a yellow warning in eastern and southern Norway.

The weather should warm up going forward, but sun hats should be replaced with southwesterlies.

– Early Thursday, thunderstorms will spread across southern Norway, Wiberg says, and thunderstorms are possible as temperatures rise.

It will also bring thundershowers to many parts of the country.

– The air mass is moist and unstable, so there is a risk of thunderstorms during these showers. But inland areas are the worst hit. If you want to escape the rain, the best option is to escape north to Stott and Dovre! Hansen says.

Northern Norway, bathed in snow while the rest of the country is bathed in sun, will have a few nice summer days before stormy weather arrives.

– Northern Norway is dreaming of a little more summer, and Thursday has exactly that chance. The weather will be better tomorrow already, but there is hope for more than 20 degrees in Nordland on Thursday, Hansen continues.

The city police will be coming to the whole country next week, especially to southern Norway.

– Yo-yo weather

Wiberg classifies the weather we store as unstable.

– We don't call it rainy weather, because the rain often lasts for hours, but now it rains, and then it's nice and warm.

It is too early to tell when the weather will clear.

– So you need to build sunbeds again?

– At least if it rains, you should be able to go together and clean up quickly! Yo-yo weather going forward, first hot, then rainy, then cold, depending on which country you're in, Wiberg says.

Although we may have less than ideal bathing weather, the meteorologist does not believe there is any reason to be pessimistic.

– I would say that summer has arrived, at least in southern Norway. You never know if a sudden cold wind will come, but I haven't seen it at any time, she continues:

– It is not unusual for hot spells such as we have just had to be replaced by some rain and thunder. It's been classic summer weather and it feels like we've had summer here for a while.

Hansen agrees, and has a message of hope for all those who dread rainy days:

– You should not completely darken it, the rain will already disappear by the end of the week, and there will be sun and heat.
