The hottest day of the year is Saturday – now it's raining

Easterners should prepare for the worst, but it's hard to predict exactly where the heaviest rain will fall. Meteorologists are encouraging boaters in Oslo Fjord to go ashore.

– It's a very warm Saturday, especially in Trøndelag and western Norway, state meteorologist Terje Alsvik Wallo tells NDP.

For the first time the temperature reached almost 30 degrees. They were closest at Merakar in Trøndelag, where the thermometer read 29.8 degrees.

– This is the hottest temperature of the year so far. It's not often that you get this high in May, when temperatures are unusually high for the start of the season. It was very summery, Wally says.

Voss recorded the second highest temperature in Norway on Saturday at 29.4 degrees.

This was the case at Operastranden in central Oslo on Sunday.

On Sunday, high temperatures will likely continue across the country. In the capital, the temperature was below 27 degrees on Sunday morning.

But soon the sun may disappear in many places.

Not a tropical night

Meteorologists have warned of thunderstorms and strong winds of up to 25 m/s in parts of eastern Norway.

Thunderstorm clouds typically occur on warm days, when warm, moist air rises into the air. They usually start out as small, white, innocent clouds that look like cauliflower. But they can grow quickly. By the time you buy an ice cream, the storm shadow may have changed from a white weather cloud to a dark thunder cloud.

They are often very tall, flat on top, and anvil-like. Clouds are called Cumulonimbus.

— Lightning is always dangerous where it strikes, and is a phenomenon difficult to account for. Everyone should be their own meteorologist and follow such weather. Vali says one should be aware of the strong winds that come before the rains.

So, how can you become your own meteorologist? Here are some tips:

  • Follow the sky. Do you see a cloud? It looks like this Go in your direction? Then you want to make sure you can get into the house quickly.
  • Be aware of sudden changes in temperature or wind strength. It means a storm is approaching.
  • You can follow the development of rainfall In the map in Yr. It is based on radar data that shows rainfall in real time.
  • Lightning service Shows lightning impacts in real time, so you can see how the thunderstorm is moving. The map below shows where the lightning struck.
  • Remember: Thunderstorms may develop quickly. It's not a given that you'll see them in the computer diagrams above before hitting it.

The Norwegian Meteorological Agency especially encourages those on boats to prepare.

– Hard to imagine there will be lightning tonight. The weather is nice now and probably a lot of people are on boats. “I encourage everyone on a boat to get home before noon,” says Bente Wall, meteorologist on duty Online newspaper

Large amounts of lightning were reported around the Oslofjord. It may also move towards Buskerud and inner Telemark.

– Take extra care as there may be high winds. I also want to remind you to secure loose items, says Wall.

A thunderstorm in Oslo in 2010. A lightning bolt is 2 to 5 cm in diameter, but can be several kilometers long. The energy turns the air into a glowing plasma with a temperature of 20,000 to 30,000 degrees. And although it lasts only half a second, it heats the surrounding air so it expands with a thunderbolt. If you stand close enough, it sounds like thunder.

– Sufficient rain for all

The unusually high temperatures in May are over by this time, and the unsettled weather is characterized by spells of rain showers.

– In the forecasts, I don't see continued dry and hot weather like we've been having for some time now. Wallow says the weather can be unpredictable.

Thunderstorms will continue until Monday in southern Norway, followed by several days of rain and unsettled weather, but it will settle down somewhat by the end of next week.

– Sufficient rain for all. It's good for agriculture and forest fire risk, and Wally says there's definitely a lot of people happy to finally get some rain.
