The Sonos Ace is a good pair of headphones, but before its launch, Sonos updated its app.
The question is to sell or not to sell
Feedback has been mostly negative from many customers, although it appears the app issues are mainly affecting those with a large Sonos setup at home. We had no issues with the app when we tested the Ace with Arc, giving the Ace an 8.5 out of 10 points.
But Sonos now has another controversy to deal with, and this time it may be of its own making. Louis Rossman, a well-known hobbyist who has for many years advocated for consumer rights regarding the ability to repair cell phones and laptops himself, read through Sonos's updated guidelines and found something scary.
If it's true that Sonos can no longer guarantee privacy in the same way as before, it's all the more disappointing that it was the first company of this size to offer an assistant that handles requests locally on the device.
We are awaiting the situation in Europe
Sonos has already removed the phrase “Sonos does not and will not sell personal information about our customers” on its US website. We expect it will only be a matter of time before they remove the text globally, as it seems strange that they are only removing this for their US customers who are the largest customer base, whether they are from the EU or not.
The Verge has asked Sonos what's going on, but has not received a response at the time of writing. We'll update the article once we learn more and note that Sonos has made a number of improvements to the app, including alerts and wake-up alarms. Sonos has also made its platform cloud-friendly with a web version, but that platform lacks two-factor authentication.
