Abu Marahal died on June 11, and the cause of death is said to be a lack of medical treatment due to kidney failure. He is said to have died in the Nuseirat refugee camp, which is often affected by power outages and shortages of medical supplies.

During the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, he became the first Palestinian Olympic athlete, competing in the 10,000 meter race. He ran to 21st place with a time of 34:40.50.
