Semi-rigid battery – It claims the new battery can provide a range of up to 160 miles

(Elbil24): It's a so-called semi-solid-state battery that 24M now claims to have developed — which should be able to provide up to 160 miles of range on a single charge.

In this case, it would mean a radical upgrade to what we know as the current standard for electric cars. For many Norwegians, a range of 40-50 miles is good enough.

Now you're probably wondering what a “semi-solid state” really is? We briefly explained that it is similar to a hybrid battery, which is an intermediate stage between current lithium-ion technology and solid-state batteries.

The electrolyte, usually a liquid liquid, is mixed with solid particles to form a semi-solid mixture. This results in increased density, providing better contact between the electrode and electrolyte.

As a result, these batteries have lower internal resistance, higher energy density and better safety compared to traditional liquid electrolyte batteries. It is also more resistant to leakage and fire.

This is how the 24M battery works

24M, which originated at MIT, is said to have developed a number of new technologies that work together in its new semi-solid-state battery system. This is what many media outlets wrote, including the Danish company Mobilsiden.

The 24M battery uses lithium metal instead of lithium ion, providing higher energy density. The density of the entire battery pack is 350 Wh/kg.

Now, lithium metal is nothing new in the battery world, but it hasn't been used much due to safety concerns. However, 24M is said to have developed a spacer that prevents the formation of dendrites. Dendrites can be explained as small pieces of metal that can cause short circuits and fires.

The 24M also introduced monitoring into the battery cells which can turn them off in the event of an indication of a short circuit.

The mobile phone website writes that the new 24M battery design is easier to produce than lithium-ion batteries. They are also cheaper to produce because less materials such as plastic, copper and aluminum are used.

Strong charging?

According to 24M, its battery technology is 20 years old. In other words, it is longer than the average passenger car.

Perhaps as interesting are the charging options as the long range that 24M believes it can offer with its newly designed semi-solid battery.

It should be possible to charge the battery with enough power for more than 32 miles in just three minutes, even in temperatures of up to 20 degrees Celsius. Ideal for Norwegian conditions, in this case.

Now you're probably wondering how durable the new 24M batteries are? According to the graph on their website, the battery capacity after about 500 quick charges will be 80 percent. 24M also states that the new battery system will likely last between 500,000 and 1 million kilometres.

Of course, it is too early to say whether 24M will be able to deliver on its promises. We're too early in the process for that. Interestingly, there is still talk that the new battery technology may be available for testing by car manufacturers in 2025.
