Professor Helge Holden has been appointed Knight First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav for his efforts in the field of mathematics.

On Thursday, he was handed the order by State Director Frank Jensen at a ceremony in the NTNU Council Hall.

In addition to the Secretary of State's presentation, there were speeches by Rector Tor Grande, Professor Martin Grötschel, Professor Niels-Henrik Risbro, President May Thorseth, Vice-President Thierry Lundahl, Mayor Kent Rannum and Holden himself.

In addition to distinguished research in mathematics in interaction with physics and technology, the new knight supervised 24 doctoral students and more than 90 master’s students, according to the university.

He has held a wide range of central positions at both national and international levels, including Secretary General of the International Mathematical Union, Secretary and Vice-President of the European Mathematical Society and President of the European Union for Mathematics in Industry. In Norway, he was President of the Royal Norwegian Science Society and sat on the Board of Directors of NTNU for two terms. He is currently Chairman of the Abell Committee.
