Now that the Spanish holiday destination is in high season, DinSide has heard from tourists whether they fear thieves and whether they take any precautions before visiting the beach.
Couple Peter and Lolly Kelly make their way to the sandy beach of Can Per Antoni in Palma, Mallorca. They have been holidaying on the Spanish island for several years and say they are always careful.
“It's terrible not being able to enjoy a day at the beach without having to worry,” say the couple from Warrington, England.

Peter and Lolly explain that they avoid taking valuables to the beach, and that they keep a close eye on them if they dive.
– There are many cunning people who try to scam tourists, which is very annoying of course, but unfortunately we think it is just as bad in other places.
Ray Walker from Alabama, USA, says that not everyone in the family takes the opportunity to shower at the same time.
– The wife and I swap who's in the water with the kids. It could have been a crisis of losing cell phones, wallets and hotel keys.

As a result of the increase in thefts on the beaches, the national police in the Balearic Islands, which includes the popular holiday island of Mallorca, have stepped up their efforts.
The increased police effort has been dubbed “Operation Summer 2024” and consists of a force of regular and civilian police.
