Russia attacked Kyiv and four other Ukrainian cities in broad daylight. In all, 33 people were killed and 137 wounded in the attacks, according to the country's interior ministry. Thirty-eight missiles were used.
This is what the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, said. Monday's attack was one of the worst to hit the city since the war began.
According to authorities in Kiev, at least 20 people were killed and about 61 others were injured in the massive attack.
Children's hospital hit
According to the Ukrainian Health Minister, the intensive care unit and cancer treatment department of the children's hospital were bombed in the attacks.
So far, two people have been confirmed dead and several others injured. People are also trapped under the rubble, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky, who refers to the hospital as one of the most important in Europe.
– The hospital saved thousands of children. Russia cannot avoid knowing where its missiles fall, and it must answer for all its violations: against people, against children, against humanity, the Ukrainian president says.
The mayor of Kyiv said the children's hospital was evacuated after the missile attack.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the National Guard helped volunteers, health workers and state emergency services navigate the rubble and rescue people who may be trapped under the remains of the building.
Shortly after the children's hospital was hit by rockets, another medical facility in Kyiv was also hit, killing four others and wounding three, according to Agence France-Presse.
More attacks
In addition to Kyiv, the cities of Kryvyi Rih, Kropyvnytskyi, Dnipro and Prokhorovsk came under attack on Monday.
In the industrial city of Kryvyi Rih in central Ukraine, at least 10 people were killed and 31 injured, according to local authorities, and several buildings were hit, including an administrative building and an industrial building.
Zelensky, who is in Poland to meet Prime Minister Donald Tusk, said the world must come together to end the Russian attacks. He also suggested that the UN Security Council meet to discuss the attacks.
– The whole world must use its willpower to put a final stop to Russian attacks. “Only together can we achieve real peace and security,” Zelensky says.
Later in the day, it became clear that the Security Council would hold an extraordinary session on Tuesday. This comes after input from Great Britain, France, Ecuador, Slovenia and the United States.
very unusual
Rockets were fired at the Ukrainian capital in the middle of the morning, which is highly unusual.
– Attacks on Ukraine at a time when the largest number of people are on the streets. Crazy Russian terrorists, wrote Andriy Germak, President Zelensky's chief of staff, on Telegram.
The Ukrainian Air Force said it shot down 30 of the 38 Russian missiles used in the attack. Among them were Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, one of Russia’s most advanced weapons.
The missiles fly at five times the speed of sound, making them extremely difficult to stop with anti-aircraft missiles. Buildings in Kiev shook as the missiles hit.
“We heard an explosion, then a hail of shrapnel hit us,” Svetlaka Kravchenko, 33, told Reuters in Kiev.
– It was terrifying. I couldn't breathe. I tried to cover my baby with a piece of cloth so he could breathe.
– Terrible attack
Several European countries, the European Union and the United Nations condemned the attack, with the UN coordinator in Ukraine calling it “unconscionable”. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy called the attack on the children's hospital “a horrific attack on Ukrainian civilians”.
Russia has repeatedly denied attacking civilian targets, but on Monday it confirmed it had carried out attacks on “defense industrial targets and air bases in Ukraine.”
– The objectives of the attacks were achieved. The Russian Defense Ministry said, according to Reuters, that the specified targets had been hit.
According to DTEK, Ukraine's largest private electricity company, three power plants were also damaged in the massive attack.
The power plants are located in the Golosivskij and Shevchenkivskij districts of Kyiv. DTEK wrote on social media that the power grid was also damaged.
Urban in Beijing
The attack comes on the same day that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is visiting the Chinese capital, Beijing, to discuss the war in Ukraine with President Xi Jinping.
Before the weekend, Orban met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, before heading to Moscow to speak with President Vladimir Putin.
After today's meeting, President Xi Jinping said the international community should calm the situation in Ukraine as much as possible and facilitate direct dialogue between the two sides.
