Film director Joel Souza says he is deeply shocked after cinematographer Helena Hutchins was shot dead while filming the western movie “Rust.”
Souza was hit in the shoulder by a bullet from a prop gun fired by actor and producer Alec Baldwin. He was treated in the hospital and then discharged.
– Souza says I am totally sorry after losing my friend and colleague Halina final date.
– She was cute, energetic, very talented, she fought hard and pushed me to get better.
Souza also says he’s overwhelmed with all the support he’s gotten from fellow filmmakers, people in Santa Fe, and hundreds of people he doesn’t know.
The union of which Hutchin was a member, IATSE Local 600, began fundraising for a widow and her nine-year-old son. Within 24 hours, about 1 million kroner were collected.
According to court documents, Baldwin obtained the gun by an assistant manager who said it was safe.
Filming took place in New Mexico, and the fatal shooting took place on Thursday.
Hutchins, who originally came from Ukraine, was shot in the chest. Sousa stood right behind her and was shot in the shoulder. No one is currently charged in the case.
