Jude Bellingham was introduced to the Real Madrid fans at the Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday. There it became clear that he would be given the number 5 shirt.
Real Madrid confirms this Twitter.
The most famous player to wear the number before Bellingham was Real legend Zinedine Zidane. He wore the number 5 on his back throughout his time as a player at the club between 2001 and 2006.
The Frenchman later returned as a coach and led the capital’s team to, among other things, three Champions League titles and two league championships.
“Hi madridistas, I want to thank everyone who is here on the most important day of my life, on my first day at the biggest club in the world,” said Bellingham.
Jesus Vallejo was the last to wear the number 5 shirt at Real Madrid. In the past, players such as Raphael Varane, Fabio Coentrao, Nuri Sahin, Fernando Gago, and Fabi Cannavaro played with this number.
Borussia Dortmund announced last week that the clubs had agreed a €103m transfer fee for Bellingham. This is equivalent to NOK 1.2 billion.
Thus Bellingham never beat the club’s record €115m. He was appointed when Real Madrid signed Eden Hazard from Chelsea in the summer of 2019.
