Israel's Anastasia Gorbenko took silver in the 400-meter freestyle at the World Swimming Championships, and was booed when she spoke to the organizer and when she was set to receive a World Cup medal.
Perhaps the reason is the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.
– This is not the first or last time this has happened. “I am proud to represent my country,” Gorbenko said, according to a Swedish newspaper. Express.
– I do it for Israel and I am proud of it. She continued: If someone doesn't like it, it's not my problem.
Gorbenko never considered dropping the medal ceremony, though he was welcomed with a piped-in concert.
– No, I worked for this medal and I deserve to be on the podium. I thought it wasn't something I would drop because of some little kid wanting to bend over.
The medal was Israel's first in the tournament. Four months have passed since the war began.
