The power plant and city are located in southern Ukraine on the banks of the Dnipro River, 220 kilometers northeast of Kherson, which Russia occupied on Wednesday.

The power plant in Zaporizhia is the largest in Europe and will account for 19 percent of Ukraine’s electricity production.

– This is fake news. The Ukrainian nuclear energy company Energoatom said in a press release that the occupiers are trying in every way to stop the heroic efforts to protect the city.

Environmental organizations and the International Atomic Energy Agency expressed, on Wednesday, their grave concern about the fighting near the nuclear power plant.

“The safety of nuclear power plants and other radioactive materials in Ukraine should not be compromised under any circumstances,” said Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Ukrainian nuclear authorities asked the International Atomic Energy Agency to help protect the facilities.

Mayor Orlov, on Wednesday, urged local residents to resist the Russian forces.

– All municipal services are in emergency mode. Nobody will give up. He wrote on Facebook that people are determined.
