You can smell the fresh hay and hear all the birdsong. Until now, this was often associated with the whir of gasoline cars. There are now many roofless electric cars on the road.
Convertible or Roadster? The name doesn’t spoil anyone and the differences are a bit fluid. It is usually a two-seater roadster with rear wheel drive and a hard or soft top that can be removed when you feel like it. Like the MG Cybester, which will arrive in Norway already next summer.
The head of Volkswagen asks the people: – Should we make it?
The convertible is just like the new Mini Cooper SE Convertible, with a soft-fabric roof that makes the car completely open when rolled and the windows roll down. The car is already for sale in limited numbers.
We’ve taken a look at some of the electric convertibles that are here or coming soon.
MG Cyberster
Many thought it was just a pipe dream for the designer, but no: MG’s new electric car will hit the road next year. This was confirmed by MG at the Shanghai Auto Show earlier this year.
The car is a two-seater with rear wheel drive, just like the iconic MGA and MGB from the 60’s and 70’s.
The Cyberster gets special scissor doors that lean straight back. The base version gets an engine of around 250 kW (340 hp) that sits on the rear axle. It is also possible that there will be a higher model with two engines and all-wheel drive.
Dag Asbjørnsen, who heads the Norwegian Mobility Group for Norwegian importer MG, is looking forward to taking the car to Norway.
Do not do it!
We expect him to be here next summer. This will be an exciting car for us. Asbjørnsen says he protects MG’s long tradition and will be important to building our brand here at home.
Price dare not suggest.
Polestar 6
It has long been known as a concept car, but now the manufacturer has confirmed that the Polestar 6 will go into production. Polestar calls the car a Roadster, and if the factory is to be believed, it gets a very high-performance supercharger: an 884-horsepower engine that should be able to catapult the car from 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. So far, no one has said anything about range or price, but Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath is looking forward to it:
“With the overwhelming response from customers and the media after the concept car was shown, we made the decision to put this impressive car into production,” says Ingenlath.
However, you have to be patient if you are planning to buy one. It is not likely to arrive until 2025 or 2026.
Mini cabriolet
After Mini introduced the electric concept car Mini Cabriolet, there was so much positive feedback that the manufacturer decided to build such a car. Granted, it’s only in a small series of 999s, but if you’re quick, you might be lucky enough to buy one.
The Mini Cooper SE Convertible, as it’s called, is just 3.85 meters long, has a 184-horsepower engine and will manage a range of up to 201 kilometres, according to the manufacturer. Mini doesn’t mention a Norwegian price for the car, but the petrol version of the Mini Cooper SE costs around NOK 300,000 in Norway.
Fiat 500 red convertible
Some might argue that the small Fiat 500 RED isn’t a true convertible, but at least it has a fabric roof that can be rolled back and down toward the trunk. Also, you can go to the store to buy one today. The price is around NOK 370,000. The car is small (boot capacity is 190 liters) and light, so even if it has a relatively small battery it should last 300 km before it runs out. The 118 hp engine sits up front and takes the car from 0-100 km/h in nine seconds.
Cheap Tesla: We know this
This might be the vehicle for you for someone who wants a little air in your hair and doesn’t need a lot of space.
Tesla Roadster
Already in 2017, Tesla showed what was to become its new car. The plan was for it to go on sale in 2020. So far, no one has seen the car and it’s not certain if it will go into production in 2024, which is the plan for now.
The prototype shown so long ago had superlative performance: a range of 1,000 kilometers, 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 2.1 seconds and a top speed of 400 kilometers per hour. All-wheel drive will, of course, become standard.
Perhaps it is not surprising that many begin to doubt whether anyone needs a car with such performance and whether the Tesla Roadster will ever go into production.
However, it is possible to reserve the vehicle on the Tesla Norway website. It will cost you just over NOK 400,000.
Maybe Volkswagen will come
In 2021, Herbert Diess, head of Volkswagen, showed graphics for the ID card. 3 convertible on twitter. After that, it was quiet, but rumors circulated in the media that Volkswagen is building a design study for the car. Whether the car will ever go into production is uncertain, but one can hope.
