A pair of worn-out silver shoes that Elton John walked on stage in have fetched much more than expected at auction.
Auction house Christy The sale price had previously been estimated at between $5,000 and $10,000, but the shoes fetched $94,000, roughly 980,000 kroner, at Wednesday's auction.
The silver shoes had platform soles, and were well marked from use. Elton John used it a lot on stage in the 70s, and he has saved it until now.
The 76-year-old star – who retired from touring after 50 years on the road last year – recently sold his home in Atlanta, Georgia, which he used as a base for his US tours. The auction house has commissioned Christie's to sell the assets from there.
The first auction round of a total of eight included, in addition to the silver shoes, a grand piano that fetched more than two million kroner, a pair of rocket-shaped cocktail shakers that sold for half a million kroner, and a number of works of art. Art adorned Elton's walls – including a gold-framed Banksy triptych, which fetched NOK 20 million.
Enthusiastic collectors are bidding aggressively on the antiques, resulting in amounts up to ten times what the auction house had expected.
