HAUGESUND: A massive fire has broken out in an apartment building in the Bjørgvingata area near Havkaland Secondary School.
Emergency services attended the scene and put out the fire. The fire was very strong when emergency services arrived at around 3.30pm.
– Many apartments have full high voltage. There is nothing to indicate the presence of people inside the housing units in question. We spoke to someone who was in the apartment that caught fire, and that person says there was no one inside, says Olaug Bjørnsen, operations manager at the Sør-West police district at 4.10pm.
– We are inside with smoke divers and searchers working to put it out. We try to limit the spread of the fire as much as possible, Svein Nesse, duty manager at 110 Central in Sør-Vest, tells Haugesund’s Avis.
Bjornsen of the police said several people in nearby houses were evacuated due to the smoke.
– I don’t know how many, says the operations manager.
A journalist from Haugesunds Avis at the scene said people are being asked to stay away from home.
The building has four apartments, but Bjornsen says the fire was the most severe in two of these.
– As far as I know, it started in one place and spread to many places. Firefighters later brought the blaze under control, but are currently extinguishing the blaze.
Police could not comment on the cause of the fire.
