Actress Camara (24 years old) had an experience that many expect her to play R&B and soul only because of her background, but she herself just wants to make pop music.
When Fatuma Kamara performed at the Oslo Bellarum Festival in 2019, she expected to be described as a pop artist, but many associated her with something else.
– I automatically put in soul and R&B booth. They write that I have a soul voice, and I definitely don’t. Aretha Franklin writhing in the grave.
She thinks people reduce her to the color of her skin.
– Just because I’m black, I was put in that booth. There is one category in which I can succeed and thrive in some way. While Norwegian artists of Norwegian descent can transition from one genre to another, there is only one category for me, she says.
– Expect me to be ethnic
Camara first became famous when she was untouched of the month on P3 in 2019.
On Wednesday, she appeared on VG’s list in Bergen.
The 24-year-old sings and composes his own pop songs. She compiled five VG reviewers for both take home And the “SPF 3000”.
– Many expect me to be more ethnic. You have dark skin, then you have to use something from your roots, she tells VG.
The Bergen artist says she loves her roots, but doesn’t need to use them in her music. At least not now.
The music industry has a narrow eye for the needle, and Kamara experiences she has to fight a little more for the same spot as the others.
– You are not skinny, you are not white, and at the same time you make a pop. It’s almost short circuits for people. She says it doesn’t fit with what we’re told he’s a pop star.
During her time as an artist, she received many letters from young girls who wrote that they had never seen anyone like her in the industry before.
– I think it is very important that I continue to show myself and do my things.

big ambitions
I want to be one of the greatest artists of Scandinavia. Then I should “bring” and “do what you have to do”. I’m not saying I deserve a place just because I’m in the minority, but I do deserve as much space as anyone else.
She thinks it’s hard to get support in the pop industry if you end up outside of what has been set as an ideal in the industry.
The 24-year-old worries that if things are out of your control, one must find another way to get around them.
Life is too short, and people will put you in a box anyway. Then I have to think about how to use this to my advantage.
hard to say
– When I say I feel like the pop industry is “white girl dominated”, they hear it and feel attacked. I’m not saying it’s the white girls’ fault. It’s not Britney’s fault that she is so easy to market. It’s not the Kardashians’ fault. It is a system error.
– How do you think we can do something about it?
– I have no idea, but I think our generation has come a little further. A wave has started, so maybe change will eventually happen.
