-I'd rather find the next Mbappe

Sir Jim Ratcliffe was recently a guest on the podcast «Geraint Thomas Cycling Club», where he received many questions related to Manchester United.

One of them addresses this summer's transfer window, where there will naturally be hopes for what Ratcliffe and his team-mates can achieve.

However, one could say that a star like Kylian Mbappé will not walk through the doors.

– What I would rather do is find the next Mbappé, rather than spend a fortune just buying success. “In a way, maybe it's not smart to buy Mbappe,” says Ratcliffe.

– But what is more challenging than finding the next Mbappé, or the next Bellingham, or the next Roy Keane, he continues.

Ratcliffe would rather find a new Bellingham or Mbappe than spend the entire wallet on one player.

In response to a specific question about whether United should try to sign Jude Bellingham, the new minority owner replied:

– He's a great footballer, but that's not what our focus is. The solution is not to spend a lot of money on great players.

-The first thing we need to do is put the right people in the right boxes who run and organize the club, and make sure the recruitment process is correct. It's an essential part of running a football club, and doing things right.

If Ratcliffe could pick a former United player for today's squad, he reveals who would be at the top of the list: Paul Scholes.

– In a way, this is the type of player they miss the most, says Ratcliffe.
