After fading out during the European Commission in England, a new national team manager will be in place for the Norwegian national team. Now work is going on behind the scenes at Ullevaal to find the right candidate.
Martin Sjögren was sacked after the European Commission’s failure with Norway earlier this month. It was the same fully motivated To continue in the position he has held since 2017, but the NFL and football chief Liz Clavins did not share the same opinion.
Work is now underway to find a replacement, preferably before the crucial World Cup qualifiers in September against Belgium and Albania.
We are in full swing working on forming a new training team. Although we’re making rapid progress, we’re still taking enough time to facilitate a good transition, says Klaveness to VG.
Sjögren was originally under contract until after next summer’s World Cup, but 0-8 with England and a loss in the crucial group stage match against Austria made it impossible to continue the collaboration. He signed the contract late in 2021.
Although Klaveness now reports that they are working quickly, it will not give any temporal perspective on new hires.
– I cannot say when we will be ready to conclude and announce, but at least it will not be in the next few days, says the head of football.

Many considered Hege Riise the hottest candidate for the job. Now the profile of the former national team is the manager of the J19 national team, which recently reached the EC final.
Every coach has the ambition to advance. I really enjoy NFF, J19 and the experience I’ve had now. Anything more than that cannot be talked about, Reyes himself said during the first half broadcast by NRK of the match between France and Iceland earlier in the tournament.
TV 2 expert and former national team player Solveig Gulbrandsen says Riise is emerging as the “obvious candidate” after Sjögren.
– She has all the required experience and has shown that she is a skilled trainer, with both J19 and LSK. Many people with ambitions want to be as high as possible, says Gulbrandsen — who was clear just over an hour before Sjögren’s resignation — she could not have envisioned the Swede continuing in the job.
Other names mentioned are the newly appointed Bayern Munich coach Alexander Strauss and former men’s national team manager, Per-Matthias Hogmo.
Monica Knudsen was also mentioned. Klaveness stated in 2016 that he sent “disturbing signals” when Sjögren was appointed as the new national team manager to Knudsen’s account in particular. She was recently part of Riise’s support team during J19 EC. She also has a long list of accomplishments as a top-level coach in Norway. She is currently the Director of Development at Vålerenga.
