Mooy provided an assist on the first goal, clearing the way for the winner with an acrobatic scissor kick that was blocked on the line before Adams slotted in the rebound.

Southampton got off to a terrible start when Lincoln’s corner was fouled with two minutes left to play. Ainsley Maitland-Niles tried to clear the ball, but instead threw the ball in a high arc towards his own goal. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazuno should have passed the ball but pressure from Paddy O’Connor pushed it into the net instead.

The Division 1 mid-table visitors initially looked more energetic than the Southampton side who played their first meaningful game in over five weeks.

In the 25th minute, there was still an equaliser, courtesy of a good assist from Moi and an assistant referee who wasn’t quite awake. Television footage showed that Adams was offside when Mooy hit a cross and the striker nodded at the goal, but there was no video assistant referee technology in the League Cup and the score remained.

In the 74th minute, Mooy delivered an acrobatic volley from a Theo Walcott cross, but it was saved by Joe Walsh. Adams reacted quickly and caught the rebound from close range.
