Mourning in Ukraine after deadly Russian attack

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko on Tuesday ordered flags to be flown at half-mast throughout the city and all entertainment events to be canceled. The same is true for a number of other cities in the country.

Kyiv was hit hard by the attack. Most attention has been paid to the fact that the city’s largest children’s hospital was targeted – an attack that killed two people and injured many others. The low number of casualties is due to the evacuation of the hospital shortly before the attack, including 600 minors.

UN Secretary-General Danielle Bell, who monitors human rights in Ukraine, called the attack one of the most shocking since Russia invaded the country. Six hundred children have been moved to other institutions, many of them cancer patients in serious condition.

Collection campaign

Now several Ukrainian companies have started a campaign to collect donations so that the hospital can be rebuilt. According to statements and information in the media, about $7.3 million – about 80 million kroons – was received on Tuesday.

Kyivstar, Ukraine's largest mobile phone company, was among those that promised $250,000 (2.6 million kroner) for reconstruction.

A young doctor was killed in the attack and the hospital's dialysis unit was completely destroyed, hospital director Volodymyr Govner said.

– He says at least four of the hospital's buildings were partially destroyed.

UN: Direct Hit

Russia denied attacking the hospital, instead claiming it was hit by debris from a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile.

It does not agree with the analysis of the UN Office for the Coordination of Human Rights in Ukraine. From video footage, it is likely that the hospital was directly hit by a missile.

More than 100 buildings are said to have been hit, and the attack is being described as one of the worst since the war began.

President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that at least 38 people were killed and 190 injured, but based on reports from all places that were bombed, the total death toll is at least 41, Reuters wrote.

– We continue to work to strengthen the defense of our cities and communities against Russian terrorism. Decisions will be made. The world has the necessary strength, says Zelensky, who was on his way to Washington on Tuesday to attend the NATO summit there.
