The government announced this in a press release on Tuesday morning. The cooperation took place between Norway, Kongsberg Group and the American arms company Raytheon.
NASAMS is a ground-based air defense system with a range of 40 km and a maximum height of the system of 20 km. Several air defense systems have been donated to Ukraine, where they have been well received.
We need to strengthen and expand air defense in order to better protect civilian and military targets against air attacks. The war in Ukraine has shown how important air defense is in war. The cooperation agreement we have now signed with the Norwegian company Kongsberg and the American company Raytheon lays the foundation for the further development of the battle-tested Nasams air defense system against future threats, says Defense Minister Björn Arild Gram (Sp).
The press release also notes that the new cooperation agreement will lay the foundation for further strengthening the Nasams’ already strong and battle-tested characteristics and unique position in the market.
“Today we celebrate an important milestone in solidifying NASAMS’ legacy as the world’s leading medium-range air defense system,” says Tom Laliberte, president, ground and air defense systems at Raytheon.
– We will continue to invest in the development of NASAMS to support Norwegian defense and our allies around the world.
