New study: linked to Alzheimer’s disease

New research from Neurodegenerative Diseases Institute of Florida Researchers in the US believe they have found that belly fat may be linked to the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, decades before symptoms appear.

– We’ve known for some time that when the stomach gets bigger, the memory centers in the brain get smaller, says Alzheimer’s researcher and neurologist Richard Isaacson. CNN.

Isaacson was not involved in the study, but he is a leading dementia researcher.

Subcutaneous fat is the fat reserves located directly under the skin. Visceral fat, or belly fat, is what accumulates in the abdomen in the spaces between the organs.

Reports indicate that too much visceral fat increases the risk of serious health problems Norwegian health informatics.

The study showed that individuals in their 40s and 50s who have a greater amount of belly fat have a greater amount of an abnormal protein called amyloid in part of the brain. We know that protein is one of the oldest places where Alzheimer’s disease occurs, says study lead author Cyrus Raji.

The difference between the sexes

Raji says they also saw a gender difference in the study.

– Men had a higher proportion of abdominal fat and amyloid than women. That’s because men have more visceral fat than women, Raji says.

The study also found a relationship between abdominal fat and Brain atrophyIn a part of the brain called memory centers Hippocampus.

Brain atrophy is another sign of Alzheimer’s disease, says Raji.

Cerebral atrophy is a collective term for brain diseases that cause brain cells to die and be partially replaced by supportive and connective tissue.

– the pressure

Raji and his team published the study in the journal Aging and Disease in August, and there were originally 32 adult participants in the study between the ages of 40 and 60.

The team has continued to add participants and is now presenting results with an additional 20 people, 52 in total.

They presented the study Monday at the 2023 Radiological Society of North America conference.

As more people were added to the study, details about how inflammation from belly fat affects the parts of the brain where Alzheimer’s disease occurs have come into focus.
