Norway won this point tooth and nail as it used all the tools in its belt to keep the Spanish at bay. With a score of 9-2, Norway should consider themselves happy that the Spaniards never broke through, but the expert allowed himself to be impressed.
– This was an incredibly mature and seasoned match by the Norwegian team, says NRK expert Karl-Erik Torp.
A Spanish team advanced in possession in the first 45 minutes. Spain had the most chance with Alex Garrido’s shot, but the half ended goalless.
At this point, Spain went on to win the group while Norway finished second.
Spain made a trio of changes and switched speeds in the second half when Norway played very low. The Spanish came close to beating Norway’s last chance on several occasions, but Magnus Rogland Rey and the Norwegian defense avoided all attempts.
And when the referee blew his whistle after 93 minutes, it was clear – Norway made sure of reaching the historic Champions League semi-final!
By defeating Greece, Iceland can challenge Norway in the last play-off. But when points were shared against Greece, Norway advanced even with a loss to Spain.
This is the first semi-final match that Norway has reached in six attempts, and Portugal will be next Thursday on the other side.
