Emergency services are on the scene following a report of smoke and heavy thunder in the western part of Porsgrunn.
No one was injured and no signs of fire were found, police said at 10.45pm on Sunday.
At around 11:30 they received a report of an explosion, says the Operations Manager of South East Police District, Per Eptang.
– When we arrive at the scene, we can see some smoke, but no injuries. “We did some investigations in the area, but we don't know exactly what caused it, or what caused the explosion,” he told NRK at 11.30 p.m.
NRK spoke to several witnesses at the scene. They describe a huge explosion.
– The neighbor describes that the smoke was probably 15 meters high and the whole house shook.
It must have been going on for days
Neighbors say it happened several days a week. But this evening's collision must have been brutal.
According to neighbors, the explosions occur simultaneously and wake up children in the area.
Eptang confirms that the police also received information about it on Sunday.
– If we thought or suspected that the area was dangerous, we would have made it clear. But we have no doubt about it, he says.
An NRK reporter at the scene sees a hole in the ground and what may be the remains of a green petrol can nearby.
The police said that they are taking statements from the witnesses and are investigating. They say they searched the surroundings and documented the place and captured whatever they found.
– It is very difficult to say what it will be. Operations manager says we are working on a hypothesis but we haven't ruled out anything else.
