Trump’s strongest rival
DeSantis, 44, is considered by many to be the strongest challenger to former President Donald Trump (76) in the battle for the Republican nomination ahead of the presidential election in 2024. US President Joe Biden (80) has confirmed that he will run for re-election.
So far, only two Democrats have confirmed they would challenge him — attorney and anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (69) and writer Marianne Williamson (70).
DeSantis was re-elected governor of Florida in November, but held off announcing his intention to run.
According to opinion polls, Republican voters currently favor Trump over DeSantis as the presidential candidate.
