Norway must prepare and open up to more alternative energy production, including all types of nuclear energy. This requires us to make national and local arrangements for the safe construction and operation of nuclear energy, as well as for the management of waste. It was therefore a great pleasure and good news that the Modum Municipal Council decided on 17 June that Modum Municipality should join the Norwegian Municipal Nuclear Authority.
Nuclear energy requires a national policy and an international perspective on energy production and Norway’s role as an energy nation. Nuclear energy is recognized as part of all scenarios to secure global energy supplies in the face of security policy challenges, as well as to halt the degradation of nature and the climate crisis.
We must make arrangements for Norway to play an active role in ensuring that nuclear energy is developed in an acceptable way in our neighbouring countries, in Europe and around the world. We need a national initiative to deal with nuclear energy so that we can create the right conditions for full energy production.
That's why it's important to be a member of the Norwegian Municipal Nuclear Authority. There we will put the relevant facts on the table so that we can make fact-based political decisions about alternative ways of operating energy production. We will learn and be part of an important network. It's not about building a nuclear power plant in Modum.
