Stoltenberg warns against escalation

In Kosovo, different groups claim the same land, and before the summer, violent unrest increased. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned against escalation.

– I welcome the recent steps taken by Pristina to reduce tension, including reducing the number of police forces in the north and plans to facilitate new municipal elections, Stoltenberg said on Thursday after his meeting with Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani Sadriu.

Pristina is the capital of Kosovo. In the north of the country, 50,000 ethnic Serbs live in four municipalities. Many of them do not recognize the declaration of independence from Serbia in 2008, and many of them boycotted the elections that took place in Kosovo earlier this year.

Before the summer, 93 NATO peacekeepers were injured in violent riots linked to the conflict.

“I urge all parties to avoid provocative rhetoric and act cautiously and in line with their obligations,” Stoltenberg said on Thursday.
