On Thursday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will continue to lose allies. Security Minister Damian Hinds, Northern Ireland Minister Brandon Lewis and Chancellor of the Exchequer Helen Whatley have also announced their resignations.
Decent and responsible government depends on honesty, integrity and mutual respect. With great regret, I have to leave the government, because I no longer believe that these values will be preserved.
Lewis wrote in his resignation letter.
Finance Minister Rishi Sunak and Health Minister Sajid Javid resigned on Tuesday due to a lack of confidence in Prime Minister Johnson. On Wednesday, he was followed by more than 30 ministers of state.
Reuters reported that more than 50 cabinet members resigned on Thursday morning.
The background to the dismissals is the accusations of Boris Johnson aware of past abuses committed by politician Chris Pincher.
Pincher is now under investigation for sexual assault.
“I abhor all forms of bullying and the abuse of power,” Johnson said during a hearing in the British House of Commons on Wednesday afternoon.
Johnson survived a motion of impeachment in early June of this year. Any possible rule change from the commission would now be able to lift Johnson’s immunity, and make it possible for him not to be trusted again.
