The price war is on Easter snacks, but not on snacks

The price war is on Easter snacks, but not on snacks

If you made a trip to the store on a Monday, the price of a quick lunch was NOK 6.63 in most cases. Easter chocolate is most commonly sold in three-packs, four-packs and six-packs, but you have to factor in the price One Chocolates, the price at the three big discount chains was the same regardless of the size of the package.

However, that was the case when we purchased a number of typical Easter items on Monday. VG understands that several chains have reduced their prices following VG's trading on Monday.

Obviously, the three lower-priced chains also follow each other with debatable eyes when it comes to the Easter foam and Easter bunny from Cloetta, which on Mondays respectively cost NOK 9.10 and NOK 7.20 in Rema, Kiwi and Extra.

The three then also sold five Nidar marzipan sausages for NOK 18.50 and oranges for NOK 14.90 per kilo. It wasn't long ago that the price of the latter was 19.90, but now the price is lower.

The lowest price is cheaper on small goodies

– The price war on Easter is underway?

– Yes, and not only that. There are many goods whose prices have fallen, Kiwi communications director Christine Arvin tells VG.

– But most low-cost chains shy away from price wars on small items. Don't want to compete with Bunnpris, which charges NOK 7.90 per hecto?

-We want to be the cheapest among the three low-priced chains in the field of small goods. But this price has not changed in recent days.

He says this offer is valid throughout the three-week Easter campaign from start to finish.

Coop Norge's communications director, Harald Christiansen, confirms that price competition is particularly tough for Extra at this time of year. This could lead to abnormally low prices of some products, according to him.

However, Extra will not be exempt from the Easter price war.

– Extra has to make sure that customers, who are also our owners, get the cheapest possible shopping basket in everyday life and during special holidays like Easter, says Christiansen.
But they didn't pay snack prices either.
-We follow our competitors in the low-cost market.

Foam war

The 100g bag of Cloetta's Easter Foam is a highly contested product.
