The British royal family is not known to settle for one partner for life. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip may have stayed together until death separated them, but three of their four children divorced their first spouses.
King Charles (75 years old) is one of them. He is not aware of the fact that love can appear when you least expect it. Now, it is his right-hand man, Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Thompson (40), who is making headlines.
Thompson was one of Queen Elizabeth's most trusted bodyguards when she was alive. When King Charles assumed the throne, he was promoted to a sort of chief secretary to the new royal couple. Thompson had a distinguished career in the 5th Battalion, Royal Scottish Regiment.
New Rumors: Answers
He follows the new king closely, and during his coronation in May last year he charmed Britons of all ages with his good looks and stern manner.
Charles's super secretary has always been viewed as a girl's genies, and she is very attractive. He married marketing director Caroline (46 years old) in 2010, and they have a son who is approximately six years old.
But then Thompson followed what may be familiar royal traditions. He started a relationship with another woman!
He met PR director Olivia Lewis (33) from London, and the beautiful music was born.
Like Thompson, Lewis has also worked for the British royal couple – and some have speculated whether the royal apartments in London may once again be used as a romantic getaway.
But Johnny didn't want to play a double game in the long run – he broke up with his wife. According to the Daily Mail, Thompson and Lewis have been together for a year and are said to be a “good match” and “very happy.”
Major Johnny Thompson received high marks in popularity polls, and not just among women. Last year, he ranked third in the social power index of the popular British fashion and lifestyle magazine Tatler.
“Within the walls of the royal palace, the king’s secretary uses his unique enchanting power,” they wrote in their justification.
Now, the acquitted lieutenant colonel is no longer the only example of people in the king's inner circle engaging in extramarital romantic relationships.
Charles's best friend, Captain Ian Farquhar, was also struggling with love. He was the King's loyal hunting companion until his death on March 6 this year at the age of 88.
Farquhar counted Charles and Camilla among his best friends, and his daughter – Rose Farquhar, 40, was Prince William's first girlfriend, 41.
Ian and Charles shared a common fate, because in the early 1990s, the Captain struggled with the decision to leave his wife, Pammy Jane, whom he married in 1972 and with whom he had three children.
According to the Daily Mail, Ian and then-Prince Charles would regularly discuss their romantic dilemmas over a pint at Hare and Hounds in Westonbirt.
Charles at that time was married to Princess Diana, but as is known, he never forgot his first love – Camilla Parker Bowles.
Ian was deeply in love with one of the richest women in Britain – Charlotte Anne Monckton (69), now known as Charlotte Townsend. They began a relationship, and eventually Pammy Jane made things easier for her husband – and filed for divorce.
But the relationship with Charlotte did not last. When that ended in 1993, she married another British divorcee.
Regent Charlotte is the only person in Great Britain – apart from the royal couple – who is allowed to keep swans. She's still in a state of royal tension, even after her relationship with Farquhar ends.
But at Farquhar's memorial service, her absence was conspicuous, out of respect for the rest of the family.
Due to cancer treatment, King Charles was unable to remember his dear friend. But Queen Camilla requested it, as did her ex-husband Andrew Parker Bowles (84 years old).
The Queen fought back tears during the memorial service at the Church of St Michael and All Angels, where Captain Farquhar's daughter Rose sang “Danny Boy” to open the emotional 90-minute service.
