In the audio recording, McCarthy claimed to his party mates that he confronted Trump.
“Let me be clear with you, and I have been very clear with the president: He is responsible for his words and actions,” McCarthy said in a Jan. 11 phone conversation with fellow party members, according to the newspaper.
In public, McCarthy has been more ambiguous in his rebuke of Trump.
